CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
The show has a minimum of 9 but no real maximum. The Tullamana locals could number anywhere from 6 to 30; similarly the B.I.G. business people and the narrators. Within the locals, business people, and narrators; there are some individual singing roles that need to be cast. All the ensemble roles can be played by the same people if need be as the show can run on a cast as small as 9. The four main roles are:
Lester Lawrence: Naïve but eager, excitable. Has lived all his life in the small country town of Tullamana. Brought up by his father after his mother died. His home is the hotel his father owns and runs – The Mud Bath Hotel.
Evelyn Mcgrath: More level headed than Lester, but feels much more deeply her emotions. Also brought up in Tullamana, has known Lester all her life. She feels more for him than just friendship.
Lester’s Father: Lost his wife when Lester was young. He is very much a father figure of not just Lester but the whole community, runs the hotel like his family. Extroverted but extremely caring.
Miss Yahwhohow: Sly, sensual PR girl for the business conglomerate B.I.G. Manipulative and knowing, she makes use of her considerable physical charm to effect B.I.G.’S and her own goals. Playfully amoral. It is hard to dislike her.
The Narrators: 6 Narrators as interested in the action as the audience, they are cheering for Lester and Evelyn and are emotionally involved. Some have solo singing to do (Narrators 1-6).
Tullamana Locals: Spend most of their day at the Mud Bath Hotel in Tullamana. A diverse mix of country farmers, older CWA type women, aging hippies, misplaced surfers and young people with not much to do. Within this bunch there must be selected the following who have solo moments:
Rainbow: A hippie, dresses in multi colours hence the name; fairly spacey, didn’t quite survive the 60’s.
Blue: Runs the postcard shop behind the bar; country surfie, some solo singing.
Moose: More country farmer type, some solo singing lines.
Shorty: Sings whole song “Always Your Friend” and many solo lines.
Gloria: Played as older CWA type lady, very proper and polite but warm Talking lines.
B.I.G. Business People: A homogenised, dark-suited, sun-glassed, pack of unfeeling powerful business executives. Totally un-individual, they move as one and execute their moves sharply and coldly. Within this group, about six have singing solo lines, thought this can be economised, those six will be referred to as B1-B6. The two main business people from this six are-
Business 1: Or B1 as written in script. Main power broker in B.I.G., nameless and brooding.
Raoul Mercedes: 2nd most powerful. In the second act with Yahwhohow running B.I.G., he becomes Yahwhohow’s lackey. Has a song to sing in ACT 2.
The Birdpeople: Wear ceremonial Birdcult costumes, fanatical followers. In script, numbered 1-6.
Cameo: As well, there are other smaller cameos to fill: The wardrobe Fitter (or Fitters); Clapper Boy; Director 2; Stagehand; Taylor Bottomley-Randelle; Sign Woman; Toblerone delivery boy; Floor Director; Make up Woman.
